The artists for the popular geeky webcomic Penny Arcade have their office walls completely covered in whiteboard. Many fans of the comic strip have inquired about how to duplicate a similar installation in their own offices, dorm rooms, or bedrooms. Thanks to dry erase wallpaper, the good news is that you do not have to be a celebrated comic book artist with a large number of resources at your disposal in order to create a similar environment for yourself.
One advantage that dry erase wallpaper has over traditional dry erase boards is that it does not succumb to the streaks or “ghosting” left behind by dry erase markers, even if the marks are left un-erased on the board for a long time. Furthermore, dry erase wallpaper is considerably less expensive per square foot than a traditional dry erase board. Unlike a traditional white board, dry erase wallpaper can be placed around curved objects like poles, pillars, or curved walls with ease. Finally, unlike a traditional white board, dry erase wallpaper is customizable to any shape or size. It can be cut to fit around light switches and sockets and can be customized to fit in tight spaces.
There are many different types of dry erase wallpaper and wall coverings available on the market today. Dry erase wallpaper is, essentially, a dry erase surface with a sticky backing which can adhere to any flat surface, especially walls or even dog-eared dry erase boards. Dry erase wallpaper comes in permanent and non-permanent applications, as well as adhesive and non-adhesive forms. For apartment dwellers, some manufacturers offer dry erase wallpaper which sticks to walls but can be peeled off at a later date when no longer wanted. Stronger wallpapers possessing backing that consists of a strong, semi-permanent adhesive are also available. These are obviously more difficult to remove and are not recommended for temporary living situations.
While dry erase paint is another alternative to dry erase wallpaper, dry erase wallpaper has a clear advantage in one area: application. Dry erase paint should be applied by a professional in order to eliminate the bumps and lines that inevitably occur when the paint is applied to a flat surface using a paintbrush or sponge roller. However, a novice can easily affix dry erase wallpaper to a wall without worrying about pesky bumps and texture. There are exceptions, of course. Dry erase wallpaper does not work as well with walls with very uneven surfaces or bumps.
